No More AP Summer Assignments for Tallwood Students

Starting this Summer, there will be no more AP Summer Assignments at Tallwood High School.

When asked about what the new policy was, Dr. James Avila, the Principal at Tallwood High School, said, “There isn’t one; there are no summer assignments.”

Before this decision was made, every AP class came with a Summer assignment. This assignment is usually due on the first day of school or the first few weeks of school

Dr. Avila believes that it is not fair to give a summer assignment when no instruction is going on.

He also mentioned that, when he was an AP teacher, he never gave out any AP Summer Assignments to his classes.

“You’re not being instructed during the summer; you’re not given guidance on how to complete it. You’re not given any feedback. So when we come to grade it, we don’t know if it’s for work’s sake or work for learning, and we want to assess for learning,” said Dr. Avila.

The new policy asserts that AP Summer Assignments are not required for students to do anymore. This new policy has made students decide to enroll in more AP classes.

However, not everyone likes this new change. Mr. Shaheen Soorani, an AP Human Geography teacher at Tallwood High School, said he does not like this new policy.

“AP classes requires background knowledge, and without the summer assignments, students will not be at the same level,” he said.

This change is receiving positive feedback from the students.

“I think this policy will encourage students to take AP classes, as it did with me. I think it will be beneficial to students to not be so stressed during a time we’re supposed to have off,” said Carmin Berberich, a Sophomore academy student at Tallwood High School. Next year, Berberich plans on taking four AP classes since she does not have to worry about Summer assignments.

When asked why she thinks they are no more AP Summer Assignments, Mellanie Galupe, a Sophomore student in the academy said, “to encourage more students to take AP classes.”

Galupe likes the idea of no summer assignments.

“I really like this new policy because it allows me to enjoy my summer vacation and not stress about school work,” said Jackson Griffin, a Sophomore at Tallwood High School

“I think more students will be inclined to take AP Classes now that there are no summer assignments, because a common misconception is the sense that it is a lot of work…which I normally do,” said Lauren Mesina, a Sophomore academy student at Tallwood HIgh School.
