A Leaf’s Soliloquy

Troy Collazo

Crimson, Auburn, and gold delight

The passers-by from out of sight

In their cars, with cameras aflicker

They stop only to take a picture

Through the year, I have been seen

But they have interest when I'm green

But that's not how it ought to be

When I'm green, I'm full of life,

the same as you would love to be.

With aqua rushing through my veins

And brother sun shining down on me.

I should get more love than this, a season’s greeting I'll never heed.

For I'm the reason that you breath.

Which I'm guessing is an important need.

But I digress, my words you hear,

I know you'll never take.

Though my golden hues astound you now

I'll suffer your bitter rake.

Abandoned to a plastic bag,

befitting of a fallen rat

If you truly thought that I was beautiful,

Why would I deserve that.

I'll never again see the sun unclouded

Nor his rays brilliantly appear

I'll never see you itch from pollen

From my flowery peer.

O, had I not been made a leaf,

I would furnish a tear

For I see it as loss to live

For three-quarters of the year.
