Student Art Wows at the MOCA
April 6, 2017
At the beginning of March through April 2nd, art from students enrolled in VBCPS was featured in the MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art). Several students from THS had their art on display for Youth Art Month at MOCA for all to see.
Youth Art Month is an annual art showing to present the value of art and art education and to encourage public support for public school art classes. YAM (Youth Art Month) provides a place that acknowledges talent and skills that might not be represented in other subjects. Youth Art Month was established in 1961 and typically takes place between March and April.
Seniors who had their art featured at the MOCA were Amy Dinh, Kaitlynn Fryar, Trishamae Garcia, Devontye Pandt, and Lauren Brewer. Juniors were Daniel Parker and Gabriella O’Briant. The last two are Tatiyana Tolbert, a Sophomore, and Grace Brown, a Freshman.
“I’m pretty proud of it to be honest. At first I was super shocked. I totally did not expect it to happen at all,” said Lauren Brewer, a Senior at THS.
The inspiration behind Brewer’s project was her love for Chinese food. Amy Dinh made a watercolor self portrait and Tatiyana Tolbert created a giant sushi roll.
“It took, like, a good ten hours to make my project. I don’t have a name for it. I think the official name is ‘Bowl of Chinese Food’,” said Brewer.
Art students who had their work on display at the MOCA had a chance to see their art for free on March 13th.

The structure kicks me in the face, It’s evenly distributed. The fact that you went in detail was good, it helped me understand more.
