The Test Isn’t Everything: The Importance of Extra Credit

Imagine you’re in a class that you have trouble in.  Say, chemistry?  Math?  Maybe English?  Alright, now say you received the test you studied so hard for, and you still didn’t receive a good grade.  Worse: this is actaully the final grade for the semester!  Now you might think, “Oh, I’ll just do some extra credit.”  But you then find out that your teacher doesn’t allow extra credit opportunities!  At this point, you’re freaking out, right?

In my opinion, extra credit should always be allowed, no matter what the class is.  Most cases, it may not be the student’s fault for failing.  They could study for hours or ask others for help but would still have trouble with the class itself.

That’s where extra credit comes in.  Some students depend on this opportunity.  I completely understand why some teachers would not allow this, though.  Especially if they can see that the student isn’t trying their hardest to maintain a good grade.  But that shouldn’t make the teacher discourage extra credit for all of their students.  For those students who clearly care–stay after school, come to tutoring–teachers should be willing to give extra credit.

Next week, I shall investigate other personal opinions about extra credit, from both a teacher and student’s perspective.  How do you feel about receiving/giving extra credit?
