Everybody needs at least basic math, reading, and writing skills; however, have you ever wondered, “Why am I taking this class, this isn’t going to help me in the future?” One of the classes that most students don’t ask the question for is Economics & Personal Finance. In this class you learn how to set a budget, do your taxes, and get the right insurance for you. Although that means there is already a class that benefits the students for the future, that’s only one out of eight classes they take every year. Adding a culinary class in school would be incredibly beneficial for students because it would teach students to save money, know what they are cooking, and how to cook healthier food.
One of the ways culinary class would teach you to save money is by making you look objectively at what you are spending on food and finding a better and cheaper alternative. The first one I can think of is comparing buying Chick-Fil-A and making your own burgers at home. If you were to buy a chicken sandwich, large fries, and a large drink six times a week, it would come out to around 84 dollars; however, if you were to buy enough for six burgers, buns, fries, and a two liter bottle it would come out to be roughly 45 dollars meaning you would be saving 39 dollars.
Gaining the skills to cook in school will assist you in being healthier if done right, as fast food chains are known for not using the healthiest ingredients. When you cook your food at home you can adjust your cooking to what you want and/or need. One example is like if you want to go to the gym and build muscle you would cook foods that have more protein than anything else. However, if you were to go to most fast food restaurants, you aren’t able to customize the meal completely to your needs.
Teaching students culinary skills will help them in the future in various ways because some students don’t learn any culinary skills due to their home situation. Also culinary skills will make them more confident to cook food for themselves, handle food, and operate a knife safely.
