Obama Misinterprets Title IX

Noah Birthisel, Staff Writer

Last Friday the Obama administration released a letter stating that transgender individuals must receive treatment that corresponds with their gender identity. The letter claims that Title IX extends to gender identity and public schools that fail to cooperate with these guidelines will not receive federal funding. Regardless of my view on the transgender debate I do not have very positive feelings towards the administration’s choice of action.

First off, the conclusion made by the administration is an almost classic case of double think. The Obama administration claims that Title IX extends to gender identity even though the word ‘gender’ is not used at any point in the document. This can only mean that sex and gender are synonyms or are synonymous which is an idea that is contrary to the fundamentals of transgenderism. Somehow nobody involved with the creation of this letter pointed out this leap in logic.

Second off, the fact that this could even happen should create national outcry. The letter isn’t a law yet it has guidelines and punishment. By utilizing its power over the funding of schools the administration can feel free to throw its weight around without needing to write laws. This simply too much power for a single branch. Not only that, but the administration has decided that its power should be used for something as controversial as transgenderism instead of much more pressing issues that affect more than the <1%.

If this event is anything it’s an example of how the administration will be handling hot button issues regarding public schools for now on. Drop in unannounced, make demands, loosely connect an already existing law to these demands, and hang money over the heads of any resistance.
