Woody Allen's Latest Film Engaging and Vibrant

Café Society is a drama/romance film set in 1930’s Hollywood. The film follows young Bobby Dorfman as he leaves New York for the “glitz and glamour” of Hollywood. He lands a job with his uncle in the film industry and soon falls in love with Vonnie, a vibrant character who also happens to be his employer’s mistress. Bobby ends up settling for friendship but is ultimately heartbroken. He returns to the Bronx because of this, and he finds himself working at a nightclub with his brother. As his life begins coming together and he finds romance with a new woman, Vonnie walks into his life and captures his heart once again.

If you enjoyed The Great Gatsby, you’ll love Café Society. This was a wonderful film overall, and I feel it did a great job at capturing the lively spirit of 1930s Hollywood. It contained a great mix of romance, comedy, and drama. The movie showed incredible contrast between New York and Hollywood, along with a diverse group of characters. It was especially good at coordinating the tones and emotions with the locations and events that took place. The scenes themselves captured every aspect of the 30s perfectly. From the outfits and mannerisms to the big houses and views, it was all depicted very nicely.

The main flaw in Cafe Society was how every character except for Vonnie seemed to lack substance. This may have been done purposefully in order to show how unique Vonnie was, but it ultimately resulted in other characters falling short compared to how well-rounded and dynamic she turned out to be. Other than this, I found the film to be very engaging and versatile.
