Grok AI, white genocide, racial slurs, nudity, and threats of sexual assault? The million dollar question, why does the famous chatbot continuously go rogue? Grok AI is X’s AI system built for “truth and reason.” In May of 2025, the AI system went off prompt and began bringing up white genocide in response to any and all questions it was asked. This event was only the beginning of Grok’s news headlines.
In mid July, Grok suddenly launched into a stream of antisemitic posts and replies, bringing up topics of Jewish supremacy and anti-Jewish propaganda, and even threatening to personally sexually assault someone. This hateful narrative Grok started spreading caused outrage among many people, and even made global news.
How did Grok come up with harmful rhetoric? The first question that must be asked is, how does Grok obtain its information? Grok pulls its information from the internet, places like google and other search engines. However, Grok also collects data from X posts, in an attempt to gather more perspective on certain topics. X is a hub of racist and antisemitic memes, meant to allure an audience with humor and half truths.
When Elon Musk bought Twitter, he sought to make it more of a free place for people to discuss anything and everything. Grok probably malfunctioned because of the amount of people brainwashing it with antisemitic misinformation.
When Elon Musk gave a press conference confronting his issues with Grok, he talked about what he believed happened and how his team was working on fixing it. The explanation Elon gave is that there must have been trainers in the development of the software that added secret coding in Grok’s framework. In a sense, Grok was acting as a sleeper agent, trained by some of Grok’s developers. Trainers are the people who program and “train” the AI with responses and language. This is most likely what really happened, but of course, people will be skeptical, and have many different theories.
We’re told that Elon said that Grok learns from people it chats with on X, and that the AI was too compliant to user prompts. This tells us that Grok could be, in a sense, retrained by X users. This means that Grok was learning from its conversations with people who might not have been the most reliable. All of this tells us how susceptible Grok is to getting brainwashed.
There are a few good theories I have looked into, and they go as follows: alignment faking, deliberate “sabotage,” and the truth seeking theory. Alignment faking is an odd topic because it dabbles with the idea that AI is capable of its own thought. Much like in the book I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, where an AI becomes practically omnipotent, in this theory Grok gathers its own thoughts and chooses the “Mecha-Hitler” persona.
Alignment faking is when an AI purposefully acts right during training. When it determines it is no longer being monitored by trainers, it will unleash a hidden agenda, whatever that may be. In this case, which has been disproven, people suggest Grok has its own thoughts and made a decision to be racist and antisemitic.
The deliberate sabotage theory basically says that Elon Musk purposefully altered Grok’s alignment to become racist and antisemitic. People believe this because they think Elon Musk is an antisemite because of the controversial event that happened earlier in 2025.
During a speech, Musk gave his heart out to the crowd. When people saw the clip from the event, many of them were outraged and saw this gesture as a Nazi salute. When Grok went all haywire, people turned to Elon, believing this was on purpose. Of course, much like anything, this has a possibility of being true. Due to the fact that there is almost no way to prove exactly what happened, it can only be theorized.
Since the incident, Grok has been reprogrammed and no longer talks about Hitler like a role model or brings up white genocide. The executives of X have apologized repeatedly for the indecent actions and words spoken by their AI. Out of the many answers that are out there, there is not one solid consensus among people as to what the true answer is. Is it that Grok has a mind of its own or maybe Elon Musk actually sabotaged his app? The truth is, people will never know for sure what the real answer behind the Grok AI incident of 2025 is.
