B.E.T. Hip Hop Awards Honor Past and Present

The 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards was electric due to the energetic performances, intense cyphers, laidback hosting and comedic interludes.

The night started with Future performing his hit “Where Ya At,” outside of the building. His performance left much to be desired as it lacked vitality.

Where his set fell short, the next quickly picked up the slack. In his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, it’s only reasonable that “the king of the south,” T.I, would be among the energetic few as he performed on a set with Young Dro.

Energy flowed into the next set as IHeartMemphis approached the stage and hit the Quan along with his young backup dancers.

In the next performance, a look of confusion was brief across the face of OT Genesis as the host, D.J, and crowd lured him to the stage, but his bewilderment quickly gave way to pure energy.

Emotion coupled with a message makes true hip hop raw, and it’s in the cyphers that rappers get the opportunity to prove their authenticity. This year, multitalented recording artist, Tink, proved herself capable as the only female in the 1st cypher of the night. The very next cypher continued with Def Squad. Redman in particular let his rap skills be known and in doing so, demanded respect.

Later that night, the cyphers introduced a hip hop veteran, Doug E. Fresh, who took the time to represent the beatboxers and also brought to the scene two newcomers.

As we set aside time to honor our veterans of hip hop we acknowledged one particular man. Scarface, commonly known as “The face,” was awarded the IAmHipHop Award for his ability to evoke strong emotions in his listener, and for his openness and willingness to discuss controversial but pressing issues.

Of course he was not the only artist to walk away with substantial awards. Big Sean, Future, J. Cole, Fetty Wap, DJ Mustard, and Drake were recipients, none too surprisingly as this has been a very productive year for the aforementioned artists.

It’s been rumored that Snoop Dogg will host the upcoming BET Hip Hop Awards, and one can only guess that he’ll be just as comic as this year.
