The High Cost of Senior Year

Marissa Howell

Senior year. A time for celebrating, counting down, and spending vast sums of money. The expense of senior year can get pretty high for most seniors, some even having to cut out major class functions to afford others.

The actual cost of a senior year (of just the basics) is extremely expensive, with just basic things ringing in at around $1,000. That total doesn’t include prom activities, just the ticket cost. Our senior bundle alone was close to $250, and then our graduation bundle from Jostens, which includes our cap and gown, was $300. That’s already $550 in a few short months.

For some students that price is astronomical. The school should be working with students more closely in outlining the upcoming costs of senior year at the end of junior year, including a list of deadlines and upcoming costs.

This outline earlier on gives Seniors a broad, tentative view of what they are going to have to potentially come up with and save for.

The school does try to keep up with posting the deadlines for things but occasionally cuts it pretty close. I think, sometimes, that they forget some Seniors are solely responsible for paying for their activities along with any other bills, such as their phones or car payments.

The only things you should be stressing about in your senior year is what color to wear to prom and what college you are going too. We shouldn’t stress about paying for school functions just to hang out and be normal with our friends.
