Coach Agreste Stresses Teamwork in Baseball
March 3, 2017
The boys’ baseball season started February 25th, 2017. Tryouts took place earlier than that, and from there the teams were split between Varsity and Junior Varsity.
When talking to Joe Agreste, head coach of the Varsity Baseball team, he spoke about his hopes for the team and the outcome he wants from the season.
“It’s not necessarily based off a win/loss record. As long as we’re progressing forward, which we are, if we continue to do that to me, that will be a successful season,” said Coach Agreste.
Miles Watson, catcher and Senior at Tallwood High School also talked about what he hopes for from the season.
“A winning season. A conference title,” Watson said.
There’s always room for improvement, and the Tallwood baseball team is always looking to get better. When asked, Watson and Agreste both spoke about what they felt the team could work on as a whole.
“We can always improve as a team, and probably the biggest thing we can improve on is the word itself. ‘Team.’ Many times we find guys in high school, it’s hard to sell that team concept. We’re in a society where most people believe it’s about them, and just like many other successful sports, baseball included, it takes a team effort. So to bring everybody together, and to be collaborative, to work as one unit. That’s always in need of improvement,” Agreste said.
“We had many close games last year where we were on top but couldn’t finish the job,” Watson said about the matter.
Agreste also spoke about the schedule they work with during practice.
“Early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable,” Agreste said about their schedule.
“A regular workout, if it’s 3 o’clock start, most everybody is out here when they get out of school. 2:20, 2:30 they usually arrive, they start stretching, and it’s pretty common everyone is ready to go well before that 3 o’clock official start time. They’ll run, they’ll stretch. You know we’re a firm believer in good stretching, just to insure we minimize chance of risk of injuring muscles.”
Baseball means a lot to the players. When talking to Watson, he talked about what baseball meant to him.
“Baseball is my life. I play baseball with a purpose, and that purpose is to fulfill my dreams of making it to the league,” Watson said
Watson is well on his way to playing for the league as he recently signed to Polk State. Juwuan Weaver, right outfielder, and senior, also committed to Potomac State.
