From senior sunrise to senior sunset, we find ourselves outside enjoying the warm weather. A popular activity to be done in the warm weather, especially amongst us teenagers, is tanning. Whether we are at the beach, lounging in a pool, or in our backyard, the sun’s ultraviolet rays reach us with the same influence. While it’s definitely true that excessive exposure can cause harm to our bodies, it’s also important to recognize the advantages of being in the sun!
The body can recognize vitamin D and regulate hormones. A shortage of vitamin D has also been linked to type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis (a disease that attacks nerve cells and affects bodily functions and movement). The body constantly absorbs and replaces bone tissue. Osteoporosis is when the new bone creation doesn’t keep up with old bone removal. The sun can help with this.
Doctors have suggested UV can help various skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, jaundice, and eczema. Unprotected fun in the sun is recommended for only 10-15 minutes, but those with darker skin can be outside for around 25-30 minutes since it is proven they produce vitamin D more slowly.
Sunscreen is important, but the wrong kind can be detrimental. Oxybenzone is the worst sunscreen ingredient. This ingredient makes the sunscreen easily applicable to the skin, but it causes allergic reactions and acts as a hormone disruptor causing harm to children. According to one article, “Data has proven that adolescent boys with higher oxybenzone measurements had much lower testosterone levels.” These products should still be tested for toxicities such as skin irritation, skin allergies, skin absorption, and the potential to cause cancer, disrupt the hormone system, and cause harm during the reproduction and development of sunscreens. Another option for sunscreen is mineral sunscreens, which have higher safety ratings compared to chemical sunscreens. It is important to find sunscreen that works for you and is non-harmful.
Another benefit of being in the sun is better sleep. People exposed to sunlight in the morning cause melatonin production to start earlier, compared to those who aren’t exposed to this daylight. This causes the person to sleep earlier which is super important for your health. Exposure to sunlight also affects serotonin levels. Without sun exposure, serotonin levels can lead to a higher risk of depression and feeling down. The brain is triggered to release serotonin when the sun hits your skin, boosting one’s mood and energy.
Overall, going outside to take out the trash, walking, or sitting outside can help boost your health.
