GSA Offers Hugs, Acceptance, Snacks

Cassidy Wagner, Staff Writer

Congratulations Tallwood, we finally have a GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance)! It’s a wonderful club that is a judgment free zone and brings everyone together so we can support and learn to understand each other. We also try to see how the rest of the world is doing with being progressive and open minded, as well as in the US. Anyone is welcome to the club.  Mrs. Cleveland, guidance counselor and club sponsor, share her thoughts along with club members Oakley and Blake.

What is the GSA like?

Oakley: “GSA is a really fun and accepting place for anyone. It’s where you know you can be yourself.”

Mrs. Cleveland: “Accepting, comfortable, buzzing with excitement.”

Blake: “It’s a family”

What all do you do?

Oakley: “We talk about things happening in the world and our lives and provide support for each other.”

Mrs. Cleveland: “Promote awareness, promote acceptance, allow students to be comfortable and safe in a caring environment and raise money for local charities and organizations.”

Blake: “We advocate for the community and the unheard LGBT+”

How does GSA help you?

Oakley: “I know that everyone there will accept and support me no matter what.”

Mrs. Cleveland: “I get to know Tallwood on a more personal level and allows me to have more awareness for the GSA community and it allows me to be a part of another important Tallwood club.

Blake: “It helps me express myself and feel like I’m helping others.”

Should every school have one?

Gladly, all three responded with a very enthusiastic “Yes!”

So as you can see, this is a welcoming a wonderful community. The GSA is currently planning on doing fundraisers for local charities. If you would like to join, just come to any of the meetings as it is open to anyone and will be announced on the morning announcements. I know, now you’ll actually need to pay attention to the morning announcements to find out when the days are. In the end, GSA is a club that likes to mix business, pleasure, and support. Hopefully this open-mindedness will spread all over for a better, safer future.
