Shock! Fear! Excitement! Horror films have everything one could ask for and more. Personally, horror films have always been a part of my life since I was about 10 years old; so they’ve always had quite the impact in my life. My goal in this article is to explain why everyone should consider adding horror films to their list of genres to watch with 5 solid reasons.
I interviewed Jamilynn Bashinsky, a Tallwood student, and asked how she felt about the matter and she stated, “Yeah scary movies like The Poltergeist made my heart beat so fast, I love it.”
Now let’s discuss the reasons everyone should watch horror.
1. Thrilling and Exciting!
I also asked Jamilynn what made her watch horror films or come back to them, and she answered, “It’s something about the feeling they give you when the suspense builds up and you don’t know what’s going to happen next. Then they get you with that loud music or scare that makes you jump out of your seat. It’s especially best when they have a plot twist.” The objective of these types of films are to put people on the edge of their seat and scare them. Especially with the special sound effects that help build that suspense.
2. Face Your Fears
Horror Films can give individuals a controlled environment to face their fears. Whether it be a fear of the dark, ghosts, or the unknown, they are able to simply turn it off anytime and anywhere. Over time, viewing these scary situations in movies can help in real-life situations and bring awareness to them.
3. Social Bonding
Especially in the fall season, horror films are an amazing bonding activity to do with friends, family, or maybe even a special person. If you’re clutching a friend’s arm during a tense scene or laughing after a jump scare, these emotions can definitely bring people closer. Horror movie marathons particularly around Halloween are a super fun way to hang out with friends and family.
4. Sparks DEEP Conversations
Many of these films are more than just the scare; they often have symbols or talk about societal issues, moral situations, and psychological depths. The films Get Out or The Badadook show and spread awareness to topics such as racism, grief, and mental health. Watching and talking about horror movies can lead to some deep meaningful conversations about things beyond the screen.
5. Escape Reality
Just like other cinematic movies, horror films allow individuals to escape everyday life. They take you to eerie worlds with mystery and suspense. They keep your mind fully engaged, entertains, and gives individuals a different perspective on things that are more out of the ordinary. The intensity of most scary films can provide a refreshing break from routine. They offer a chance to step out of reality and experience something different and intriguing.
While horror films may not be everyone’s first pick, they can give benefits that make them worth exploring. From the adrenaline rush to the thought-provoking themes, horror movies provide more than just the scare. They offer excitement, connection, and even personal growth. So, the next time you’re scrolling through movie options and genres. Consider giving a horror film a try. You may discover a new favorite genre with these 5 reasons.
