For me, joining this class was more than unexpected. On the first day of second semester, I was part of a completely different elective, not even aware of Journalism’s existence. But, after a few days of lovelessly floating through Computer Systems, I learned of Journalism through Mr. Denvir.
I was most excited at the prospect of being taught once again by a teacher who thoroughly impacted my life in all the best ways. I wanted to relive the nostalgic moments from sophomore year English class, especially when I learned that I had other friends in Journalism.
And this was exactly what I got plus so much more, Journalism was a class where I not only dove into a subject in which I had no prior experience, but one where I got to relax around a group of people who I felt comfortable with. It was something that I did on a whim, and it ended up being an amazing decision.
Looking back, this behavior was something that defined my High School career. I’m not one to plan things out very far in advance, something which both helped and hindered me. But, if I were to go back, I don’t think I’d change anything. I have very few regrets, and I was able to experience and cherish the present without having the weight of the past nor the anxiety of the future on my shoulders.
So, while I’m sure future students taking journalism may have different experiences from mine, my biggest piece of advice would be to focus on “the now,” and always be willing to adapt.
