At the beginning of my senior year, I did not plan on taking Journalism as an elective. In fact, it was my third elective choice. I didn’t know what to expect at first, and as funny as it sounds, I actually initially thought the class was about journaling, not newspaper writing.
However, when the class began, I actually learned quite a bit. I learned how the writing styles of newspapers differed from the typical five paragraph essays I was used to writing, and how to truly grab the reader’s attention right at the beginning. I also learned how to properly interview people and give quote attributions, which kind of made me feel like a professional journalist.
I also enjoyed being able to apply all the skills I learned to a news story each issue. Initially, it was an adjustment that took some getting used to. But by the fourth issue, I got to write what is now one of my favorite pieces of writing called Chaos Rains, which surrounds the drama about senior assassin.
As the school year and this class come to an end, I look back on this semester and my time in Journalism proudly. Aside from the growth I’ve had as a writer, I’ve also made new friendships, which is honestly what I’m going to miss most about this class.
So to prospective students thinking about taking Journalism, whether it’s your first choice or your last, just go for it because I can guarantee you it’ll end up being one of your favorite classes by the end of the year.
