Overly Harsh Attendance Policy Hurts Students

Christionna Jones

Attendance is a major concern when it comes to High school. Students can be given a warning or punishment due to the amount of absences they’ve had during the semester. Having too many absences can cause court proceedings. Students should be given proper, more reasonable punishments.

The current policy, of forbidding their chance of graduating or passing, isn’t fair for students who have personal things going on. Some schools do give an opportunity to make up all assignments that affect the course grade; students are to complete those assignments within a reasonable time. However, students who have too many unexcused absences will either fail for the semester. Or, if the student is a senior, they cannot walk the stage according to some schools throughout the county.

Students’ absences are computed for every class; a student who misses more than 15 minutes of any class will be considered absent whether they were out for 15 minutes before class or in the middle of class going to the bathroom ect. This adds more absences to the ones they already have, pushing them into a completely different academic state. Students should be punished with write ups or a call home, not misleading UNVs.

Getting written up and getting phone calls home are more compatible for parents and more affective for students, but many would say punishments for students in high school don’t do enough damage for their decisions, mostly because high school students are old enough to be able to know consequences. But people around the world do all kinds of wild things knowing what the consequences are. Punishments don’t help.

So, do you think students should be given a proper punishment or should they be counted for ability by absences?
