House on the Corner

Rachel Kidd

Creaky old house
With squeaky old floors
Front door opens, just a crack
Look both ways, curiosity killed the cat
Dusty parlor, floral armchair
Dark leather boots, peculiar stale scent
Step, eek up the staircase
Don’t make a peep
Someone’s up there
Wind rattling the frame
Whispers through the empty window
Shhhh
Winding up the railing
Shattered faces on the wall
Peeling paint and rusty nails
“Did you hear that?”
Creeeeak
In that room down the hall
The door slams shut
The whole house shudders and sighs
Walking faster, towards the door
“But wait, come back little boy!”
Running, tumbling down the stairs
Grass padded fall, scramble down the street
Relief
“Stay away from houses that creak”
